Recognizable across nearly all our local reefs, Acropora is a genus of small polyp stony coral in the phylum Cnidaria. Also known as table coral, elkhorn coral, and short staghorn, this coral is crucial for reef building and provides habitat for many marine species.
2. Porites (Boulder Porites Coral)
Boulder Porites sp corals come in many varieties. Most are called mountain or rocky coral because of their appearance, while others have much clearer markings and interesting polyp formations. These hardy corals are a staple of the reef ecosystem.
3. Montipora (Funnel Coral)
This funnel coral, often mistaken for either a Pachyseris rugosa or Turbinaria sp. depending on the ridge or pore formations, is a common hard coral across reefs in Southeast Asia. It’s sometimes also called the Elephant Skin Coral.
4. Favia (Great Star Coral)
The great star coral grows in fairly small colonies, often forming domes, boulders, or cone-shaped structures. Pattaya has some really old and truly giant examples to see, making it a fascinating species for divers to explore.
5. Fungia (Mushroom Coral)
Fungia, or mushroom coral, is a solitary coral species that resembles a mushroom. It’s often found on sandy bottoms and can move slightly to find better light conditions, adding a unique element to the reef landscape.
6. Goniopora (Maze Coral)
Maze coral, also known as LPS Coral, includes varieties such as Red Goniopora and Green Maze Brain coral. These corals vary in size, with some large ones found in Pattaya. They are very pretty and mesmerizing to stare at.
7. Plerogyra (Bubble Coral)
Bubble coral is a beautiful coral not so common but a good find. Often mistaken for some kind of fish eggs, different variations can be found depending on whether it’s in a shallow or deeper water reef.
8. Dendronephthya (Leather Coral)
Leather coral, or toadstool coral (Sarcophyton spp.), is typically cream to light tan in color, sometimes with a slight yellow hue. They are common around Pattaya & Samae San, adding to the area’s coral diversity.
9. Gorgonia (Sea Whip)
Sea whip corals, part of the order Gorgonacea, are characterized by long, whiplike growth and a variety of bright colors. They sway gracefully in the ocean currents, providing a colorful spectacle.
10. Gorgonian (Sea Fan)
There are about 500 different species of sea fans and gorgonians found in the oceans. They are particularly abundant in the shallow water reefs around Pattaya, where they form large, fan-like structures that support diverse marine life.
