Koh Rong Nang and Koh Rong Lakhon are two small satellite islands connected by a sandbar and shallow rocks, located a few hundred meters from Koh Chuang. These islands offer diverse and exciting dive experiences, making them some of the most popular sites in the Samae San Area. The name “Ron Lakhon” translates to “theater” in English, reflecting the captivating underwater show these sites provide.

  • Location: A few hundred meters from Koh Chuang
  • Depth: Max 25 meters, Min 5 meters – Average 10 meters
  • Type of Site: Shallow rocky areas, coral lines, small walls, and drop-offs
  • Level: Suitable for all diver certifications, with some routes ideal for tech divers
  • Conditions: Generally fair in any tide, good visibility year-round
  • Average Visibility: 10 meters to 30 meters

Where are the dive sites at Koh Rong Nang?

Koh Rong Nang offers a variety of dive experiences:

  • Rocky North Reef: Shallow Coral encrusted Rocks are everywhere covered in sponges and fans.
  • Southside Reef: Sweeping coral lines that join with a small wall and drop-off.
  • Nudirock 1 and Nudirock 2: Deeper out across the sands at 15m and 19m respectively, these rocks are home to nudibranchs, morays, shrimps, and other critters.
  • Drift Dive Route: From the southern end of Koh Rong Nang to the backside of Koh Rong Lakhon, ideal for experienced drift divers.

What Aquatic Life is Common at Koh Rong Nang?

Koh Rong Nang and Koh Rong Lakhon host a rich variety of marine life, including:

  • Nemo Fish (False Clownfish): Found in the anemones in the shallows.
  • Hawksbill Turtles: Frequently spotted throughout the dive sites.
  • Blue Spot Sting Rays: Often seen hiding under the sand or near the reefs.
  • Nudibranchs: Abundant and colorful, perfect for macro photography.
  • Scorpionfish: They look likes stones but add spice to the underwater scenery.
  • Moray Eels: Commonly found hiding in rocky crevices.
  • Shrimps and Other Critters: Found around the deeper Nudirock areas.
  • Giant Trevally: Occasionally seen cruising around the deeper blue edges of the island.

Nemos, Turtles, and Sometimes Giant Trevally

In the shallow areas, you’ll find lovely anemones housing Nemo fish (false clownfish). The chances of encountering one or more turtles, whether giant or baby, are high. Although not seen on every dive, there are frequent sightings of Giant Trevally fish cruising around the deep blue at the edges of this island, adding to the site’s allure.
